Silent Hill is a 2006 Canadian-French horror film directed by Christophe Gans and written by Roger Avary, Christophe Gans and Nicolas Boukhrief. The film is an adaptation of Konami's survival horror video game series Silent Hill. The film, particularly its emotional, religious, and aesthetic content, includes elements from the first, second, third and fourth games in the series. It stars Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Jodelle Ferland, Alice Krige, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger.
The film follows Rose, who takes her adopted daughter Sharon to the town of Silent Hill, for which Sharon cries while sleepwalking. Arriving at Silent Hill, Rose is involved in a car accident and awakens to find Sharon missing; while searching for her daughter, she fights a local cult while uncovering Sharon's connection to the town's past.
Development of Silent Hill began in the early 2000s. After attempting to gain the film rights to Silent Hill for five years, Gans sent a video interview to them explaining his plans for adapting Silent Hill and how important the games are to him. Konami awarded him the film rights as a result. Gans and Avary began working on the script in 2004. Avary used Centralia, Pennsylvania as an inspiration for the town. Filming began in February 2005 with an estimated $50 million budget and was shot on sound sets and on location in Canada (Brantford, Ontario). The film was a co-production between Canada and France.[2][3]
Silent Hill was released on April 21, 2006, grossing nearly $100 million. Film critics praised the film's visuals, set designs, and atmosphere, but criticized the film for its dialogue, plot and runtime. A sequel titled Silent Hill: Revelation was released on October 26, 2012 and was critically and commercially panned.
Plot[edit]
Rose and her husband, Christopher Da Silva, are concerned about their adopted daughter, 9-year old Sharon, who has been sleepwalking while calling the name of a town, "Silent Hill". Desperate for answers, Rose takes Sharon to Silent Hill. As they approach the town, she is pursued by police officer Cybil Bennett, who has become suspicious of Rose's motives after witnessing Sharon panic at a gas station when her drawings are mysteriously vandalized. A mysterious child appears in the road, causing Rose to swerve and crash the car, knocking herself unconscious. When she awakens, Sharon is missing, while fog and falling ash blanket the town.
Rose wanders the empty streets of Silent Hill looking for her daughter but is stopped when, upon the sound of a siren, the town transforms into a dark and distorted alternate version of itself, and she encounters a large group of disfigured monsters. When the town reverts to its normal state, she meets a woman named Dahlia Gillespie, who speaks of her own daughter, Alessa, being abused by the townspeople. Upon seeing a photo of Sharon in Rose's locket, Dahlia mistakes Sharon for Alessa, and tries to steal the necklace from Rose. Rose returns to her car and runs into Cybil, who arrests her. As they head back to the road out of the city, they discover that the road is cut by a huge fracture. The two women eventually pair up to search for Sharon, experiencing Silent Hill's surreal dark side together and barely escape a tall sword-wielding figure called Pyramid Head.
Meanwhile, Christopher also simultaneously scours the town, shown to be abandoned and without mist and falling ash as it is to Rose and Cybil, with the assistance of officer Thomas Gucci, who is there in search of the missing Cybil. Christopher discovers documents revealing that the town was abandoned after a coal seam fire thirty years ago, along with a photograph of Dahlia's daughter, who is identical to Sharon. Told to stop investigating under threat of incarceration, he returns home.
Rose and Cybil meet Anna, a woman who leads them to a local church for refuge when the alternate version of the town, referred to by Anna as "the darkness", returns. As they approach it, Anna is killed by Pyramid Head after he completely excoriates her with his bare hands. In the church, Rose and Cybil discover a cult headed by a woman named Christabella. Christabella tells Rose about a "demon" who knows Sharon's whereabouts. After convincing Christabella to help them locate the "demon", Rose and Cybil are taken to a local hospital. There, Christabella also sees the photo of Sharon in Rose's locket and, seeing the likeness between Sharon and Alessa, condemns Rose and Cybil as witches. Cybil is captured by the townspeople while Rose descends into the hospital basement. There, Rose encounters a burned Alessa on a bed and Dark Alessa, the incarnation of the darkness in Alessa's soul.[6]
In a flashback, Rose discovers that Silent Hill had a long history of witch-burnings, stemming from the cult's beliefs. Thirty years before Rose's arrival, Alessa was stigmatized for having been born out of wedlock by an unknown father; her schoolmates bullied her, and she was sexually assaulted by a janitor while hiding in a bathroom from her classmates. Christabella declared her filth, and Dahlia agreed to Christabella's suggestion that she allow the cult to "restore innocence" in Alessa. When not allowed to follow Alessa into the ritual, Dahlia realized that they intended to kill her daughter and ran to the police.
Alessa was ritually burned, but in the midst of the ritual, the device holding her above the fire pit broke on one side, causing it to swing and knock over the pit, setting the church ablaze and starting the conflagration that destroyed Silent Hill. When Dahlia returned with the police, Alessa was found with third degree burns, but still alive. While in the hospital, Alessa's pain and rage caused her dark side to become incarnate in the form of a duplicate of herself; a manifestation of the darkness in her soul. Rose then learns that Sharon is the manifestation of the goodness in Alessa's soul. After the flashback, Rose is told that she must aid Alessa in her revenge by granting her entry into the church, and that Christabella will soon find Sharon and attempt to burn her as well. She decides to help, and allow Dark Alessa to merge with her body.
Rose enters the church after Cybil has just been burned alive by the townspeople, and Sharon is about to suffer a similar fate. She confronts Christabella with her knowledge of the truth, attempting to convince the cult that they are in denial of their own fate. Christabella stabs Rose, causing her blood to drip onto the church floor. The blood serves as a vessel through which Alessa exits Rose and brings the "darkness" into the church. Alessa attacks the cultists with long strands of barbed wire, which she then uses to violate and eventually bisect Christabella, killing her. The townspeople are also killed, leaving Dahlia, Rose, and Sharon the only survivors. At the end of the massacre, Alessa and Sharon fuse and become one person again.[7]
As they leave the town, Rose discovers that the abyss and the fracture is gone, allowing them to leave Silent Hill, while Dahlia stays behind. Meanwhile, Christopher returns home and falls asleep on the couch. He wakes up just as Rose and Sharon/Alessa return home, but they arrive in the foggy, Silent Hill version of the home, while Christopher sees rain and sunshine, indicating that Rose and Sharon/Alessa are still in an alternate reality.

Silent Hill: Revelation is a 2012 Canadian-French 3D horror film directed and written by Michael J. Bassett and a sequel to the 2006 film Silent Hill. Revelation stars Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Martin Donovan, Malcolm McDowell, Carrie-Anne Moss and Erin Pitt, with Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger and Radha Mitchell returning from the previous film, and is based on the survival horror video game Silent Hill 3 by Konami.[6] Revelation's plot follows teenager Heather Mason (Clemens) who discovers on the eve of her eighteenth birthday that her presumed identity is false and as a result is drawn to an alternate dimension existing in the fictitious American town of Silent Hill.
Before the beginning of Revelation's filming, Bassett expressed his openness to fans' suggestions of actresses for Heather's role. On a total estimated $20 million budget, filming lasted from March to May 2011 in Canada, with the 3D RED Epic camera used for the process; audio mixing took place in France. Revelation grossed $52,370,559,[7][8] but has received overwhelmingly negative reviews by film critics and fans alike.[9]
Plot[edit]
Sharon Da Silva (Adelaide Clemens) and her adoptive father Christopher (Sean Bean), currently hiding behind aliases of Heather and Harry Mason, have spent the past few years moving from town to town and assuming different identities. Heather believes that they are on the run from the police because Harry killed a man in self-defense and that her adoptive mother Rose (Radha Mitchell) died in a car crash. In fact, he has been protecting her from a cult of Silent Hill, called the Order. Rose was able to free Heather (then Sharon) from one of the alternate dimensions using one half of a talisman called the Seal of Metatron, but she herself remained trapped in Silent Hill.
Heather meets fellow student Vincent Cooper (Kit Harington), but is haunted by hallucinations of Silent Hill. She is approached by private investigator Douglas Cartland (Martin Donovan) regarding her identity. Heather warns Harry, but he is abducted by the Order and taken to Silent Hill. Unaware of this, Heather goes to a mall to wait for Harry, but enters the mall's Otherworld. Douglas explains he was hired by the Order to find Heather, but decides to help her when he discovered who his clients were. A monster, the Missionary (Liise Keeling), kills Douglas. Heather returns to the real world and flees, unfortunately leaving her a suspect of Douglas's murder.
Vincent escorts her home, but they find a message instructing Heather to go to Silent Hill. On the way to rescue her father, Heather reads a letter from her father detailing the truth of her background and lost memories. Heather and Vincent travel to the town, but stop at a motel, where Vincent reveals that he is the son of the Order’s leader Claudia Wolf (Carrie-Anne Moss), and was sent by her to ensure Heather came of her own volition to Silent Hill. He reveals that Heather is a part of Alessa Gillespie (Erin Pitt), a girl whose immolation 38 years ago by the Order lead to creation of the town's shifting dimensions. The resulting argument triggers a shift to the Otherworld. The Missionary grabs Vincent, but not before he tells Heather to find his grandfather Leonard (Malcolm McDowell), who possesses the other half of the Seal of Metatron.
Heather ventures into one of the alternate dimensions to find Leonard. She encounters Alessa’s mother Dahlia (Deborah Kara Unger), who reveals that Claudia intends to complete the purpose intended for Alessa at her burning. Heather finds Leonard who after informing her that the Seal of Metatron will reveal "the true nature of things," fuses Heather's half of the amulet with the one he possesses and becomes a monster. After being knocked out and carried off, Heather regains consciousness and grabs the amulet from within his body, killing Leonard. As she runs away, she unknowingly summons Pyramid Head (Roberto Campanella) and hides from him. Shortly after, she witnesses Vincent being taken away by the Order after being deemed insane by Claudia for betraying them.
Heather saves Vincent and they go to Lakeside Amusement Park where the Order's sanctuary is hidden. Dark Alessa (Erin Pitt and Adelaide Clemens), the manifestation of Alessa’s wrath, confronts Heather who embraces her counterpart, absorbing her, and making Alessa complete once again. Heather confronts Claudia, who is holding Harry and Vincent hostage. Claudia explains that Alessa's destiny was to be the incubator for a deity worshiped by the Order, who would punish all sinners upon its birth, completing Heather's destiny as well. Remembering Leonard's words, Heather gives Claudia the Seal of Metatron, revealing her to be the Missionary. Heather summons Pyramid Head, who kills the Missionary, allowing Heather to rescue Vincent and Harry.
As the fog fades from the town, Harry decides to stay in Silent Hill to find and free Rose, leaving Heather in Vincent's care. They manage to hitch a ride away from the place in a truck driven by Travis Grady (Peter Outerbridge). Travis mentions to Heather (now referring to herself as Sharon) and Vincent that they were lucky he was there since he hadn't been driving in that direction for a long time. A couple of police cars, followed by a prisoner transport, enter the area of Silent Hill which is consumed by the fog. In a post-credits scene, Pyramid Head is seen walking through an unknown area in Silent Hill.
