Lumina (ルミナ Rumina?) is a supporting character in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Initially appearing as a doppelganger of Serah, she is eventually revealed to be an embodiment of Lightning's personal trauma as a child that created a physical form from the Chaos to contain Serah's soul.[71][208] Lumina meddles in Lightning's journey, aiding her or being a hindrance, before eventually revealing her true identity and integrating back into Lightning's mind once she comes to terms with her need to be helped by her friends.
Lumina was designed by Toshiyuki Itahana, who had worked on multiple titles in the Final Fantasy series. Her look has been described as a "Gothic lolita" style.[37] Her personality and actions were made to be unpredictable, with her both aiding and hindering Lightning on her journey.[209] In creating her childlike appearance and extravagant movements, the development team tried to make them as realistic as possible.[41] Lumina is voiced by Jessica DiCicco in English and Kanae Ito in

Japanese She's Lightning's childhood and repressed inner self. What I don't get is how she became her own person or had such power, I mean this is the same kind of thing like Kingdom Hearts where the heart and the body became two people?

#4ox0shadow0xoPosted 3/17/2014 12:41:35 AM Yeah it confused me too. Like okay, I get that she's supposed to be Lightnings repressed emotions that she bottled up ever since their parents died. But why did she suddenly manifest? Why did she randomly help people, while sabotaging lightning's efforts. And why did she seemingly have control over the chaos (or at least monsters). And why was it that whenever she appeared, Hope didn't seem to notice who Lightning was talking to, while everyone else in the world could definitely see and hear Lumina?
To me, it felt like that quick explanation of Lumina, left too many unanswered questions. #5concussedbabe69Posted 3/31/2014 6:41:42 AM I think Lumina was Lightnings soul. She put all her emotions away when she was young hence why she is a younger version of Lightning. Also Lightning mentions multiple times that she feels as if something is missing (why I think shes her soul) and Hope wouldn't notice her as he is basically God and God can't sense souls. Because Lightning

could see the chaos maybe thats why Lumina could use it. IIRC God created Lumina (from taking her out of Lightning IMO) so she would have been given some powers connecting to Lightnings. Not sure if this helps but thats my opinion on the whole "who is Lumina" thing. I may be wrong but it kinda makes sense to me =]

#7Rodni_DementalPosted 4/1/2014 9:10:53 PM(edited) Ultimately, Lumina was trying to Help Lightning. But Lightning didn't understand her intentions (or remember who she was) because she was emotionless.. But that part of her still had to go somewhere when Bhunivelze tried to reform and use Lightning to restore the duality that was out of balance in the world since Etro died, so it took form out of the chaos as a manifestation of her younger self.
Lumina was the part of Lightning that Bhunivelze couldn't reach. It was also the part he could never understand, much like how he never understood the other polarities of himself (Ie. The Unseen Realm, Mwynn, Etro and Humans) and, their necessity in maintaining the Mortal Realm that he had control over. This balance of Order and Chaos, Physical and Non physical, Male and Female, are essential for the cycles of time, life, death and rebirth.
Personally I think Bhunivelze's very existence (and immortality) was the reason Mwynn and Etro were being destroyed by the

chaos, unable to sustain themselves on the other side, holding the balance for as long as possible until it inevitably collapsed and there became no distinction between either side in the world. Bhunivelze's immortality was unnatural, if he was willing to die and be reborn then he'd traivel through to the unseen realm, the very place he was always trying to reach and ultimately where he ended up at the end of this game which finally restored the balance for the new world to begin again. But that's probably getting into a different discussion. lol
